Scatching noises coming from the fireplace?

Animals including squirrels, rats, and chimney swift birds invade chimney fireplaces through openings in the chimney cap. A common scenario is an animal going down either the main chimney flue or the exterior chimney flue and getting stuck. The homeowner hears frantic noises coming from the fireplace as the animal struggles to free itself. If nothing is done, the animal will die and create an odor problem. If the animal is in the main flue, the fireplace could be opened from inside the home... but this risks a wild animal running through the home creating new problems. And what if the animal is down the exterior flue where it can't be reached from inside the home?


A typical chimney, the main flue is blocked from animal entry... but the outer flue is vulnerable.



A rope is dropped down the outer chimney flue, allowing the squirrel to climb out on its own.

After the animal is out, repairs are done to the chimney cap to permanently keep animals out.
