Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
The Gray Squirrel is probably the most encountered mammal in North America. This is the species of squirrel which is commonly seen in Orlando from sunrise to sunset. The fox squirrel and the southern flying squirrel are aslo present in Central Florida, though
only rarely observed. The flying squirrels are only active at night and the fox squirrels tend to live away from human activity. The information below is for gray squirrels.

Body size: 8-11 inches long
Tail length: 8 - 10 inches, roughly equal to body length
Weight: 1 to 1.5 pounds
Lifespan: 2-3 years in wild, up to 12 as a pet
Gestation: 44 days
Litter size: 2 to 7 per litter

Squirrels are members of the rodent family. The word "rodent" comes from the Latin word 'rodere', meaning to gnaw. Other rodents include
rats, mice, rabbits, and beavers.
Acorns are one of the most important foods for squirrels. Oak trees go through 5 year cycles of producing acorns, and as a result squirrel population goes through a 5 year cycle. When acorn production is at the low end of the cycle,
squirrel population also be at its low end.
